I once had a large debt to a hospital that I paid off over a period of
eight years. This did not hurt my credit, and may even have enhanced
my credit rating. I was never late with a payment, and was able to pay
the debt in full.

A debt which is in the process of being repaid is, of course, quite
different from a debt which the debtor appears to have shrugged off.
