How much does a dollar buy in Vermont in 1910? From a kid's
perspective, ideally, in a rural community. Perhaps the amount of
candy in a general store. The number of chickens or goats? Anything
else the kid (10 years old) might know. Thank you!

Closest I could get was an April 17, 1906 copy of the Portsmouth (NH)
Herald. Here are some of the prices it mentions:

Foresters Fair at Freeman's Hall
Admission 25 cents
Matinee Tickets for Children -- 10 cents
Season Tickets -- $1

Ryan's Wine Store -- Imported French Brandy, $1.25 qt

Booths Old Tom Gin -- $1.00/qt

Portsmouth Music Hall theater production of "Mrs Leffingwell's Boots"

"Last seasons fashionable furure at the Lyceum Theatre in New York..."

Tickets -- 35 cents to $1.50

Moving Picture Show (movie not identified):
Matinee -- 10 and 25 cnets
Evening -- 15-50 cents

Sousa concert at the Music Hall -- 35 cents to $1.50

Oranges -- 20-50 cents per dozen
Bananas -- 10-25 cents per dozen
Ice Cream -- 20 cents per pint, 35 cents per quart, $1.25 per gallon

Classified ads -- 3 lines every day for a week -- 40 cents

Package of Uneeda Biscuits -- 5 cents

Cigar -- 10 cents (Hey...a kid might want a good cigar!)

Coffee -- 20 cents per lb
Tea -- 45 cents per lb
Butter -- 25 cents

Overcoat -- 10 bucks

Hope that's some help, at least.

Hi Stacey,
I don't know about candy or chickens or goats, but this site will give
you a few ways to compare what a dollar in 1910 would be worth in
dollars today, well in 2003: namely $19.30. Or on another site
there: $ 1 in 1913 would be worth as
$ 19.66 in 2005.

Stacey --

There is a book called "The Value of a Dollar, 1860-1999" edited by Scott
Derby and published by Grey Horse Publishing is an interesting summary
of prices quoted in various publications. Pafalafa's given you some
great information but you many public libraries have the book and you
might find it worthwhile to check your library too.
