Hi,

I would like some assistance in locating my ideal "wilderness
retreat". The following are some of the things that I am searching
for:

-Isolation. A cabin that is away from civilization. I do not want to
be on vacation with other groups - I want an isolated cabin where I
can disappear and not see people if I don't want to. I envision
something like the PBS show Frontier House. Or staying on a private
island. Something totally isolated.

-I'd like activities to be self-sufficient things like wood-cutting,
gardening, perhaps taking care of animals, fishing, hiking. Things
like that.

I'd like to go somewhere for a week or two weeks or a month and be
totally alone. I'd like to wake up in the morning and go for a walk
and maybe go fishing or pick berries. Stuff like that.

Does some place like that exist? I'm in Ohio, but I envision this
place being in Oregon or Washington or something. Location doesn't
really matter.

Is this for a vacation or for a purchase? Are you willing to go to
Alaska? I know of plenty of cabins like that....I used to live in
one!!!

This is just for a vacation, not for purchase, and yes, Alaska would
be alright, but I would be interested in continential options as well.

Many places in Canada offer fly-in fishing vacations - they fly you in
to a cabin for as long as you want, and you are basically on your own.
It may be a bit more expensive than just a vacation cabin, though, as
the intent is to provide remote fishing.

Check out www.lacabanalodge.com or www.amilik.com. Would this type of
place appeal to you? These are two different concepts, both on the
same property, which is mine. I donīt want to be compensated for a
response, but I would love to hear your comments on whether something
like this would appeal to what you are looking for. Thanks!

I live in northern alberta, Canada. I live about 30 miles from Dawson
Creek BC. There are many of us that live in the 'bush' burn wood for
heat, garden and commune with nature all over northern Alberta and BC.
I myself still have internet but I have the choice to go into town or
not. Many people are dotted all over north america with cabins, living
off the land and isolation is different from one person to the next.
Most friends and family think I am very isolated but I do not feel
isolated - just secluded. The fly fishing idea is a great one but many
of them are $1000. A DAY!
I am building small cabins for people just like you. I am an artist
and writer and have many writer friends that need seclusion to get
work done. I do not intend to charge more that 60 dollars a day. I
want to encourage artists to have a place to come and either be alone
or share.
Try the HOSTELS...they are all over the world, cheap and usually secluded.
also, try posting that you will..house sit on the lonely planet forums
or other travel forums. People who leave their places for a holiday
themselves, like me, need someone to stay at their place to feed the
dog or water the plants. You may find someone willing to have you
housesit..then you get a holiday place for free and you may get the
isolation you want and still have a few conveniences. good luck!
