It's 1997. A friend makes a website for Quake Team Fortress and tells
me to check it out. I load the page up on my blazin' 56.6k modem and
this awesome midi song starts playing. I thought I saved it at one
point, but I went through all my old saved files and can't find it. I
can't find the friend either.

I do remember that the file was called "rock.midi". It's a fast paced
song. I don't think it was based on any real song.

I made a recording of the section I can remember. It's terrible, but it might help:

I've already searched google using "rock filetype:midi" and found nothing.

Thanks for your help, but that is not it. 

To my best of my knowledge the midi song was not based on any song.
It's an original midi creation.

Try a midi search at the bottom 
of this page: http://gifbrothers.com/midmusic/musiclist.htm
They have several results for " rock ".
