My late mother often used the expression "big hearted Arthur" when she
was saying that my father was being too generous about something or

Dear jimen-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question.

?Big Hearted Arthur? was a very popular character on British radio and
movies of the 1930?s-1950?s. The comedian?s real name was Arthur
Bowden Askey. In reality he was a rather small man, standing just
5?2?, but he had a very big heart and a loveable persona, which earned
him the nickname ?Big Hearted Arthur?. Some of his shows can still be
purchased today on CD today ? an innovation that has very fittingly
enabled us to immortalize comedic pioneers like Askey and many other
greats.

Arthur Askey died in 1982 after suffering from a circulatory problem
that eventually took both his legs, and ultimately his life.

I think you can be confident that your mother was paying your father a
great compliment by referring to him as "Big Hearted Arthur", and I'm
certain that your father and Arthur Askey would both be proud to have
known that. At any rate, that?s the story behind Big Hearted Arthur.

I hope you find that my research exceeds your expectations. If you
have any questions about my research please post a clarification
request prior to rating the answer. Otherwise, I welcome your rating
and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again
in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.

That's a great answer! I was born in 1953 in Scotland and I just about
remember Arthur Askey on T.V. but didn't link my mother's comment to
his name. Thank you!

Hi, here is another site that explains that "big hearted Arthur" was a
catch-phrase in Ashley's radio program -- that should be "programme".
No doubt, your mother was of the generation that listened to the "wireless".

Jimen, and if your mother also quoted: "It's been a long, long time,
a very long time, a year or maybe three," that's from Sir Harry
Lauder.
