Question ID: 532544
I have a computer with a small C:\ drive and a large D:\ drive.
This is done deliberately, as I like to keep system and data files
as separate as possible.

It works very well except for one "feature" of Windows XP: Any files
that users (e.g. me) save on their Desktop are stored on the C drive.
I would like the Desktop to actually be stored on D. Is that possible?

Thanks

Howdy atr-ga,

Would something such as the following be of help?

If so, please post as such, and I can post this as an answer. Thanks!

hi denco-ga:
I was quite excited as this appeared to be exactly what I was
looking for... However... it didn't work! I was able to change
the registry settings, but, after rebooting, Windows changes them
right back to the original settings!!

Actually moving the Desktop folder in Explorer may have worked.
It's hard to believe that Microsoft would have made anything this
easy! I will know for sure later today when I resume work on that
computer.

Thanks for accepting the following as an answer to your question, atr-ga.

Kent W. England, MS-MVP, has written a great artice titled "How to Move
Shell Folders (and contents)" which is posted on the "Kelly's Korner web
site. It addresses several methods to accomplish what you seek.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_shell_folders.htm

"To change most shell folder locations immediately and move the contents,
right-click the shell folder in Windows Explorer, drag the folder to the
new location, release the mouse button, and select the Move Here item."

If you need any clarification, please feel free to ask.

The Desktop default folder will be C:\documents and settings\loginname\desktop

You cannot change this because its hard coded into Windows XP

You will need to manually save the data to a folder linked to the D
drive, but the desktop screen will always be defautled to the C drive

hi imkizersoze-ga:
Unfortunately, you are wrong. The folder is not hard-coded. It is configured
in the Registry and can be changed with the procedures above.
