Looking for old news article (late 1990's or early 2000) that made
national news regarding a high school teen that committed suicide. He
was a popular or charismatic teen that ran a suicide prevention /
awareness / after school club to address the issue of suicide, after a
number of his own friends committed suicide. Though the club was
formed, a few more of his friends later
committed suicide and eventually, the teen ended up committed suicide
himself; hence the major tragedy and news coverage.

I cannot for the life of me remember his name, the school's name or
any other details about this article, other than the details above.
Also, suicides were not murder-suicide.

Thank you.

The details are not precisely as you've described them, but I wonder
if this might be your story:

After searching in several article databases, I can only find the
story of Les Franklin, linked by PinkFreud above.

Could it have been a college student? Could the time be different?
Could it have been a urban legend?

> Could it have been a college student?

I'm quite certain that it was a high school incident, due to details I
remember and the fact that there was an after school club or
organization that this student was running.

> Could the time be different?

It's possible that this may have been mid to early 90's as well.

> Could it have been an urban legend?

I remember reading about it through a legitimate news source, so I
don't believe this is the case. The source may have been The
Oregonian.

Sorry I can't be of more help, I've tried high and low and couldn't
find this article either.
