What service did you use to ship the packages? US Postal Service, UPS,
Fedex, someone else? If it is USPS and you did not buy any of their
tracking or insurance options, you are pretty much out of luck.

IT WAS USPS AND I DID INSURE BUT NOT FOR ANYTHING NEAR WHAT IT WAS
WORTH. DO I TRY TO COLLECT THE INSURANCE ON THE NEW YORK END OR THE
LA END?

How long has the package been lost? Sometimes things get misrouted and
take unreasonably long times to get to their destinations. I believe
the USPS will make you wait something around 8 weeks before they
consider it lost. It does not matter where you file a claim if you
end up doing that, any post office can help you with that.

I just checked on the USPS site, you can file a claim for lost insured
mail at least 21 days after sending it, but not more than 180 days
after sending it. So, my guess of 8 weeks above was a little high.
