Hi troymccas!!
Searching for your question I found at the US Census Bureau website
the data that you need.
Starting with the bed & Breakfast Inns the US Census Bureau describes
this as:
"This U.S. industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in
providing short-term lodging in facilities known as bed-and-breakfast
inns. These establishments provide short-term lodging in private homes
or small buildings converted for this purpose. Bed-and-breakfast inns
are characterized by a highly personalized service and inclusion of a
full breakfast in a room rate."
US Census Bureau
"Bed-and-Breakfast Inns" page
http://www.census.gov/epcd/ec97/def/721191.HTM
The number of Bed and Breakfast inns establishment in US is 2,898.
Your next question is about small Hotels.
Here the answer is more ambiguous, I will give you a list of
categories that can be interpreted as small Hotels:
-Hotels with less than 25 guestrooms ----> 2,386 establishments.
-Motels ---------------------------------> 21,829 establishments.
-Motor hotels ---------------------------> 2,139 establishments.
- Total ---------------------------------> 26,354 establishments.
Your last request is about "Vacation Rentals", in this category I have
included:
-Recreational & vacation camps (except campgrounds) ---> 3,513
establishments.
-Rooming & boarding houses ----------------------------> 3,485
establishments.
- Total -----------------------------------------------> 6,998
establishments.
You can see all these data and more at:

Hi again!!
I want to tell you that in the US Census Bureau web pages there are
two boxes at the right top wich allow you to refine the data showed by
state and metro area, those are "Select State" and "Select Metro
Area". If you select a state, the new page gives you the option to
choose the state metro areas and the state counties or to change the
state of course.
But note that sometimes you will lead to a regional portal, for
example I choose Atlanta GA metro area and the following page is
showed:
"Summary Statistics for Atlanta, GA MSA"
http://www.census.gov/epcd/ec97/metro0/M0520.HTM
This is not the specific "Foof & Accommodation" page for Atlanta, you
must look for its link in the list (NAICS code 72). The link isnīt in
the "Description" column, it is the blue arrow in the first column
beside the NAICS code 72.
I hope that this allows you to obtain more detailed data related local
rental vacation market sizes.
And remember, if you need clarifications, ask for it, I will respond
to you soon.

Somthing is wrong with your answer. My preliminary research shows
there are over 10,000 B&Bs and over 10,000 Vacation Rentals online,
which means that the total size of market must be double,
approximately 20,000 vacation renatals and 20,000 B and Bs. You
picked the wrong category for vacation rentals. Recreational
Campgrounds are not the same thing as vacation rentals. Vacation
rentals are more like vacation homes that the owners rent out.
If you search google for Vacation Rentals and Bed and Breakfast Inns
you will find directorys like 10K Vacation Rentals and
BedandBreakfast.com that have about 10,000 listing each for the US.

Hello troymccas:
I am really sorry about that, you are right, I gave you only the data
for establishments with payroll, nonemployers establishments are shown
separately. Unfortunately the Nonemployers data isnīt classified in
the same way as the payroll establishments data be.
The US Census Data for Nonemployers establishments page is:
http://www.census.gov/epcd/nonemployer/1997/us/US000_72.HTM
The traveler accomodation category shows a total of 31,156
establishment, including in this category Hotels (except Casino
Hotels) and Motels, Casino Hotels, Other Traveler Accomodation.
Other Traveler Accomodation category is compound by Bed & Breakfast
and All Other Traveller Accomodation subcategories.
I guess that mostly Bed & Breakfast and All Other Traveler
Accomodation can be nonemployer establishments. So, again, you are
right, this market is larger than I have stated in the answer.
I tried to find more information related to this question without any
significant result.
I apologize by this situation, and please excuse me.
Keep the contact with Google Answers to find a way to obtain a good
answer to this question.
Thank you.
