According to "AskArt" Alvin Hollingsworth, an African-American painter
from New York City, was born in 1928 and died in 2000. Here is as
much of his biography as appears on the free area of the site: "Alvin
Hollingsworth, comic-strip illustrator and painter, was born in New
York City and began drawing at the age of four, and by the time he was
twelve, he was an artist assistant at Holyoke Publishing Company for
Catman's Comics. A year later he was doing illustrations for Crime
Comics.
His paintings dealt with themes of contemporary social issues such as
the Civil Rights Movement, women's struggles, spiritual concepts,
jazz, city life, time and space and dance. He was also a mural
designer ..."
You asked if he graduated from college. I'm not 100% sure of that,
but I happen to know he attended (at least) City University of New
York, because my father was also an alumnus of that school, and while
attending a gathering he went to a student art show (in the late
1950s, I would guess), and while there he saw a painting that was
really good and which he really liked, and he bought it, for something
like $75 if I remember the story right -- later, that student
(Hollingsworth) became famous. I grew up with that painting hanging
in my family's living room. It may be that the alumni office at City
University of NY might be able to steer you to more information.
Good luck. |
