For which event were the most tickets sold - The Soccer world cup 2004
or the rugby world cup in 2003 (Rugby Union)? We know the number of
attendees, but it is rather the 'number of tickets sold' I am looking
for. |

clivus,
The last soccer world cup was in 2002. Is this what you mean?

It is difficult to determine which event sold the more tickets, but I
found these figures:
WORLD CUP 2002
"The rate of the 2002 World Cup tickets being sold is struggling to
reach levels of past World Cups with less than two weeks to go before
the May 31 kickoff date, a source involved in ticket sales confirmed
Sunday.
The source, who has been privy to information related to ticket sales
said that out of the 1.42 million tickets for games held in Korea,
around 1.05 million tickets have been sold."

"JAWOC, the Japanese World Cup Organizing Committee, has announced
that all 91,300 tickets put on sale to Japanese residents have sold
out, except for some tickets reserved for wheelchair fans."

RUGBY WORLD CUP 2003
"The ARU advised that over 1.8 million tickets were sold valued at
nearly $200 million."

jackburton,
I think what I also need is the number of tickets sold in Japan.
Although you mention the tickets to Japanese residents having sold
out, this figure does not include Japanese tickets sold to
non-Japanese residents. I would expect the Fifa world cup to sell
more tickets that the Rugby World Cup.
