"Sagres" There is quite a bit of portuguese history behind that name. http://www.cnam.fr/Images/Armada/sagres.html http://www.portugal-info.net/algarve/sagres.htm http://www.portugalvirtual.pt/_tourism/algarve/vila.do.bispo/ |

How about 'Búgio'? 'Búgio' meaning 'little devil' was the dog-like servant of St Bartolomew who is the Portuguese patron saint of sailors and fisherman. http://www.portcult.com/OPS_04.htm |

Ahoy isletakeachance-ga Is this site helpful? It only has a limited nautical vocabulary, but is multilingual: http://www.edinfor.pt/anc/ancdicio.html These are more extensive, but are only in Portuguese http://www.portogente.com.br/dicionario.php?sec=11 http://www.cne-escutismo.pt/recursos/maritimos/glossario.htm |

I lived in Brazil for two years, and this is what I came up with: 1. Onda - wave, as in ocean wave (rhymes with Honda). 2. Fogo - fog (rhymes with pogo) 3. Peixe - fish (sounds like pay-she w/ accent on first sylable) 4. Mare - tide (sounds like mah-hay, w/ accent on the second sylable) 5. Magellan - yep, the Portuguese explorer. First to sail around the world. You could also go with names like Pedro, Joao, Tiago because those are the portuguese names for Peter, John, and James (the three most prominent fishermen in the history of western civilization). Just a thought. I hope that helps! |
