For the Supreme Court case, Sony Corp v. Universal City Studios, also
known as the Betamax case (464 U.S. 417, Docket Number: 81-1687), what
time (exact as possible), was that decision made on January 17 1984?

The closest I can come is a newswire release issued on January 17,
1984 that has the time of day of the release included (which was in
the a.m., by the way).

Is that close enough for what you need?

Does the article have an indication of when the actual announcement
was made, or when the deciding document was signed? Most preferable
is the exact moment the document was signed. Please advise. Thanks!

No, I'm afraid it doesn't. Have you tried directing that question to
the Supreme Court itself?

Out of curiousity, why do you need such a precise timeframe for the
signing of the decision?

The opinion itself indicates that it was decided on January 17, 1984,
and that a petition for rehearing was denied on March 19, 1984.
The following is the text from the opinion:
464 U.S. 417
104 S.Ct. 774
78 L.Ed.2d 574
SONY CORPORATION OF AMERICA, et al., Petitioners
v.
UNIVERSAL CITY STUDIOS, INC., etc., et al.
No. 81-1687.
Argued Jan. 18, 1983.
Reargued Oct. 3, 1983.
Decided Jan. 17, 1984.
Rehearing Denied March 19, 1984. See U.S., 104 S.Ct. 1619.
Sorry I can't give a link; I got this from a pay service to which I subscribe.

The opinion itself was issued on January 17th. HOWEVER, it is
important to note that under the rules of the Supreme Court, the
decision did not take immediate effect. The rules given the losing
party 25 days to file a petition for rehearing before the "mandate" is
issued. In this case, the losing party DID file such a motion, which
stays the mandate until the petition is denied.
See Rules 44 and 45:

Does that satisfactorily answer the question?

Yes that answers the question; thank you very much. What time was the
newswire released (EST I assume)? I need to erect an astrological
chart for this event. :-) So basically, the time I am looking for is
the moment the decision became irreversible. The document in the link
you sent says that the rules were adopted in 2005; do they still apply
in 1984? I will also call the Supreme Court, thanks for the info.

Also, if you don't mind, could you supply some clarification on this
mandate? So what you're saying is that a petition was issued within
25 days of the jan17 decision, and that petition was denied on March
19, 1984. So that final date is the date that sets things in stone,
then? If so, is another document signed at that point? If so, would
you have the time for that? Thank you for all the assistance you are
able to provide!
