On a public radio station (WBFO 88.7 FM Buffalo) a few years ago, I
heard a recording of the
song "Over the Rainbow." I contacted them about it several times and
no one could recall the piece being played.
I want all the information I need to purchase a copy of this recording
- the song title, album title, artist, recording company, and maybe
even an amazon.com link if available. :-)
I have listened to every clip on the iTunes music store but I don't
think any one of them was the recording I'm looking for. What makes
this question difficult is that the song was recorded so many times by
so many people.
The recording I heard features a jazz combo including a mezzo-soprano
or alto female lead vocalist, a piano player, a bass player, and a
trumpet improvisational soloist. I cannot remember if there was a
drummer or not - if so, the drummer is just playing some brushes.
I would describe the trumpet soloist's tone as "rough."
The recording is in a slow swing style.
The vocalist sings through the tune, then she drops out and the
trumpet player takes a solo (this is the only time the trumpet is
heard), and then the vocalist goes through the tune again and it ends.
It's a very simple, quiet version. The recording quality and sound
engineering (great vocal presence) is superb.
The instrumentation and form of this recording distinguish it from any others. |

Hello cphuntington-ga,
Please listen to the clip below and let me know if it sounds like it
might be the recording that you are looking for.

If not, maybe you can tell me how this differs from the one you are
looking for so that I can narrow the choices.

In the posted recording:
The harmony instrument is guitar.
The trumpet comes in playing the tune.
In the recording I'm looking for:
The harmony instrument is piano.
The trumpet comes in improvising a solo (that doesn't start with the
tune, although it may include fragments from the tune).
If I remember correctly, the first four notes of the trumpet solo are
"ti do re ti" in whatever key, but I'm not certain.

I would put the tempo in that recording at about 72 beats per minute,
and if memory serves me I would put the tempo in the recording I want
at around 62 beats per minute, but I could definitly be off on this
factor.

Hello cphuntington-ga,
Another possibility may be Jane Monheit?s recording of "Over the
Rainbow" on her CD "Come Dream with Me" (she has recorded other
versions). I have been unable to find a full download or a clip long
enough to hear the trumpet solo, but based on the comments in the
following link, the track includes Tom Harrell on trumpet. The band
includes piano, bass, trumpet and brushes, just as you described.

?Jane's amazing voice grabs you from the very first notes of the
opening track, her breathtaking rendition of the classic "Over the
Rainbow." The soulful accompaniment provided by the rhythm section
makes this an instant hit and a reason to own this record alone, with
Kenny Barron tickling the ivory, Christian McBride layin' down the
bass lines, and Gregory Hutchinson usin' the brushes. Add Tom
Harrell's melodic trumpet fills and you've got a track to treasure.?

Right on, Googlenut!
I got the track on iTunes and the vocal decorations were just as I
remembered - and the opening motive of the trumpet solo (sol la fi
sol... pretty close!) confirmed any suspicions.
Thanks for a great effort on this search - I guess I should have paid
more attention on iTunes but the first 30 seconds of the tune weren't
enough for me to notice.
Go ahead and post your answer and I will credit you for it.
