Can you find me a pretty long list of grocery store chains around the
country that are anywhere from 3 to 100 stores? It is easy to find
all the very large chains, but I can't seem to find these mid-sized,
chains? |

skippy1-ga,
It's not often that I think I may have found a one-link answer to a
fairly high-price question, but this may be one of the rare
exceptions.
Please have a look at this link and let me know if it meets your needs:

And if it doesn't, please tell me a bit more about what you're after.
Thanks,

hey pafalafa-ga-
Although that is a good list, it isn't comprehensive. This is the
problem with many other sites I have found. I have searched
extensively, but gave up and think you can do a much better job than
me. You did find one of the cleanest and best organized sites i have
ever seen. However, I do need more. If you could, I need two things:
1) more sites that list grocery store chains like you just got. it
was perfect, but off the top of my head, i know it is at least missing
20 chains, and so i can imagine that means it is missing many more.
Mostly smaller chains, anything less than 20 stores or so. so if you
can find more sites like that, even organized like that too.
2) if you can find a list of speciality/upscale/natural grocery store
chains (anything greater than 2 stores). for example, on the link you
just sent me, there is a category "Specialty/Natural foods". This is
what i really want. however, i know this is harder to find when it
comes to chains because natural/upscale is a qualitative question. so
i figure if i had a comprehensive list of grocery chains, i can figure
out which ones are Speciality/Natural. For instance, i know the list
you have is missing chains such as New Seasons Market, EarthFare, etc.
These are smaller chains that are about 10 stores each.
Basically, I am looking to find a comprehensive list of grocery store
chains, and preferably, a complete list of natural/gourmet grocery
chain stores subdivided.
Thanks.

Skippy,
It sounds like you might need some lists like this one:
http://www.cagrocers.com/doc.asp?id=83
These are the members of the California Grocers Association, and even
though there are only a few hundred companies listed here, they
represent 6,500 stores in California and Nevada.
My guess is that most of these are chains of various sizes, though
there's no way to be sure from the list itself.
Is this useful at all? If so, there are likely similar lists at
similar associations in SOME (but not all) states. I'd be glad to
ferret these out for you.
If it's not helpful, the only other thing I can think of is a
commercial database, like Dun and Bradstreet, or InfoUSA. Let me know
if these are of interest.
Let me know your thoughts on this.

And no for something completely different!
Here's a weird link I found:
http://docs.bmccorp.net/Fleming/docs/Exhibit_A-02_Accounts%20Receivable.pdf
It seems to be a legal document from some bankruptcy proceedings for a
company that had dealings with virtually every grocery store in the US
-- or so it seems from the 100+ page list of grocers included here.
Have a look, and let me know what you think.

hey...that bankruptcy thing was great. the CA grocers, however, is
such too much information because i don't know if they are indepdent
or a chain. but if you can, please find me other states like that and
maybe i can cross reference. that bankrupcty thing was hilarious
though.
thank you!
