I recently read in an advice colunm by Dr. Fox, in the Washington
Post, that one should not run with their dog. I'd like to find that
article again. I also wonder if there is a concensus amonst dog
experts on this subject.

Hello ira8711:

Before I get into looking up the opinion of other dog experts, please
let me know if the following is the brief response from Dr. Fox that
you remember:

Dog that uses cage as outhouse should get out more

Hi websearcher:

The article I was referring to was about not running with you dog
because dogs aren't made for the kind of running we do. I have found
two article that say take your dog to your vet before running but none
that say you shouldn't run with your dog.

Hi ira8711:

I was unable to find a single reference that said you absolutely
should not run with any dog. Everything I was able to find simply had
guidelines that should be followed in order to keep your pet safe and
healthy. Even the Dr. Fox article you mentioned (and I found) was
referring more to running with *muzzled* dogs:

Dog that uses cage as outhouse should get out more
URL: http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/living/home/pets/11463606.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp
Quote: "Recently, I observed a muzzled dog running with its owner. It
took a great deal of restraint for me not to confront the dog's owner,
and the image has haunted me ever since....In hot, humid weather,
joggers sweat and can easily keep cool. But dogs can't sweat and must
pant to stay cool. Sensible dogs don't run under such conditions, and
older dogs and those with short muzzles should never be forced or
encouraged to run long distances in such weather."

Other cautions I was able to find include:

* Check with your veterinarian before running with your dog.

* Warm up your dog

* Keep your dog hydrated (give it water)

* Keep your dog on a leash and by your side

* Don't run during the heat of the day, but in morning or evening

* Certain short-nosed breeds are not good for running

* Don't run with puppies under 1 year of age

All the articles above are good to read completely.

I hope this helps.
