Hi All,

I am investigating an Internet Explorer crash(while accessing a
corporate site through VPN) on windows xp sp2 inside
of shlwapi.dll. The crashing function(couldn't figure out which one
exactly) is at offset 0x00025b7a and it crashes pretty consistently.
This happens if we access the site(with VPN) with either dialup or
broadband.

The same application runs fine inside the LAN(as opposed to VPN), though.

Are you aware of a way to fix this problem ? We have a sales demo
coming up tomorrow morning and I came to know about this
issue just a couple of hours ago. All help appreciated.

Thank you very much,

BR,
~A

BR, when I read this question, the first thing that came to mind is if
you have run SFC (System File Checker) on your computer lately? Maybe
it is just a corrupt dll file.

SFC replaces or repairs any corrupt or missing system files.

1) Start
2) Run
3) In the Run window type: SFC /SCANNOW (notice the space between
SFC and /SCANNOW)
4) Click OK

hint: You may be prompted to insert your XP disk, if so, when it
autoruns, click X on the Welcome to Windows XP window.

Give this a try and see if it helps.

hi bumblebeebzzz-ga,

thank you for your response. We recently upgraded this notebook to XP SP2 patch.

fresh finding
=============
we found a few things in the last few hours. We were able to
simulate this crash in a windows 2000 SP4 Professional notebook tool.
In this box, the SHLWAPI.DLL version was 6.0.2800.1612 dated Dec
2004(slightly > 400KB).
=============

This new development leads us to believe that the client(internet
explorer on XP SP2/2000) might not be responsible for the issue. It
probably might be the backend environment (including the VPN, Http
Server) The server application is running on Tomcat (java lightweight
application server) behind the corporate firewall (hence using VPN to
access it) on Linux.

Is it plausible why I.E would crash only when accessing through a
VPN(either broadband or 56K dialup) AND not when accessing through the
LAN ?

Thank you very much,

Best Regards,
ANJAN. B
