Sheep spend a large part of the day drowsing in a sphinx- like posture. From time to time they stretch their necks and rest the head on the ground. "In this posture phasic aspects of REM sleep such as eye movements, twitches of the ears and the legs can be observed." One could assume that some must always watch over the others to ensure the safety of the herd."
