what is static ip mapping

It can mean different things in different contexts.  Can you describe
the context that is of interest to you?  Possibly relevant keywords
might include WINS, DHCP, NAT, or MAC.

If you prefer, I can give you a relatively vague, abstract answer, but
that might not be as useful as a context-specific one.

I doing an assignment on network operating systems

the criteria is describe what is meant by ip mapping and name
resolution and i have to disuss static ip mapping

i have also got look at dhcp wins and dns 

I know that dynamic ip mapping is dhcp does the same thing apply to
static ip mapping is it know by a more common name

my tutor sid this but there must be more to it than can you go a bit deeper
static IP mapping - giving an Ip address to a machine that keeps it
forever (good for servers)

A static IP mapping is when a computer uses the same address every
time to log on to the Internet. This is how you can host a server. The
alternative is when you get an IP dynamically assigned by your server,
like a DSL provider. If you want to host a website, this gets
complicated, as you will need a synamic DNS service like those
provided by www.dyndns.org. If your interest is simply in access to
the internet, dynamic is the best route as it is headache free, and
allows for smoother interactions with your service provider. Hope this
