Question ID: 535752
I have Win xp running but want to play some old DOS games eg F117A.
They wont run in a DOS box on WINXP. How can I set up a CDROM DOS
boot disc complete with the old DOS games so I can play them. I
realise there will be issues in accessing joystick ports and sound
cards.
Am I asking too much!

Hi!!

Did you consider the use of a DOS emulator, I used one and worked fine
for me, take a look here:
"DOSBox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia":
"DOSBox is an emulator which creates a DOS-like environment primarily
intended for running older, MS-DOS-based PC computer games which may
not run properly on newer PCs. "
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOSBox

Try it, and if it works and you consider this a valid answer please
let me know in order to post this in the answer box and claim the
prize.

To download it:
(check inthe TOOLS section for a front end to easy manage it)
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1

Additional references can be found here:
"DOSBox Wiki":

I hope that this helps you.

Thanks for the information about DOSBOX. It got my copy of F117A up
and running, however I cant get F15 Strike Eagle to run. The box just
shuts down a soon as I attempt to run the .com file. Any help there
would be much appreciated.

Hi there,

Of course it's possible! I still like playing the old LucasArts TIE
Fighter in DOS, and here is what I use:

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Another alternative is if you have a Windows98 machine, you can create
a bootable floppy using the "Format Disk" option.

DONT DO THAT HARD WAY,

i had the same problem and i fixed it muuuuch more easier, and in
no-time so dont worry^^. u need an APPLICATION EXTENSION (a dll
file)its called: "Launchpad.dll" to help and support dosbox work
properly, and it can be downloaded free from www.dll-files.com

u can and should also try VDMS-sound too, thats pretty helpful
attached with dosbox and it can be downloaded from "
http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/ " here ya go friend and have
fun!!! ^__^ PS: now every single game should work=)

Thnaks for the information about launchpad.dll. The site you mentioned
only had launch.dll - is that the same. If so how do you use it with
DOS box?
Thanks
