Hello,

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 1997 there were 383,682
taxable legal-services firms, including 173,716 classified as
employers, with a total of 1,012,100 emplyoees. In addition, there
were 2,532 tax-exempt legal-services employer firms, with a total of
23,300 employees. The census conducts surveys of businesses every five
years, so it is conducting another one this year.

The above information comes from the 2001 Statistical Abstract:

I hope this answer meets your needs. If not, please request
clarification.
