Hi Again.
We had such great success last time, I thought I would pick your
creative brain again. As you recall, I am doing a fund raiser for my
autism group and you gave me some ideas for bumperstickers and pins
etc. I have teamed up with another local support group for parents of
kids with Sensory Integration Dysfunction and ADHD to offer a bigger
inventory. I would like some slogans specific to Sensory issues and
ADHD.
Although, since you know everything, I am sure you are familiar with
Sensory Integration, but just in case someone else wants to comment,
here is a refresher: DSI is a condition where a person's senses are
out of whack. (Many autistic kids have some sensory integration
issues). Sometimes they have super sensitive senses - like
extraordinary hearing, and sometimes their senses are not as keen -
like an inability to feel pain like typical people do. Senses not
only include the 5 we are familiar with (sight, taste, touch, smell,
hearing), but also, proprioceptive and vestibular - which is the
ability to understand your body's position in space and to understand
your body's position in relation to itself. Imagine being in an
unfamiliar place when the lights go out and it is completely dark.
That feeling you get is what a lot of sensory people have all the
time.
It is theorized that DSI is responsible for many cases of ADHD
(because the kids are so overwhelmed with sensations they cannot
figure out where to focus attention) and for many of the "odd"
behaviors of autistic people.
Whew. Lecture is over. I look forward to your thoughts. |
