Question ID: 536793
Does supplemental colostrum contain the milk proteins whey and casein?

Clarification of Question by 42maru-ga on 24 Jun 2005 18:31 PDT
I am taking a supplement of bovine colostrum and recently tested
positive for a food allergy to whey and casein. I don't know whether I
need to discontinue the supplement or not since mine is a
delayed-reaction IgG food allergy.

Hi 42maru,

Yes, whey and casein are present in colostrum supplements. I found one
product that is casein-free, below.

Bovine Colostrum
http://www.greatvistachemicals.com/nutritional-supplements/bovine-colostrum.html
..."Supplemental colostrum is created by drying bovine colostrum and
is available in powder, capsules, tablets or chewable
lozenges......The greater part of this protein is comprised of whey
proteins. Immunoglobulins, mainly IgG, make up about 75% of the whey
proteins. Other substances found in bovine colostrum include casein,
lactoferrin, alpha-lactalbumin, beta-lactoglobulin, and the growth
factors insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), insulin-like growth
factor-2 (IGF-2), transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) and
epidermal growth factor (EGF). In addition, bovine colostrum contains
vitamins, minerals, lipids and lactose. Bovine colostrum may also
contain colostrinin, also known as proline-rich polypeptide (PRP), a
substance found in ovine (sheep) colostrum..."

If you are looking for casein-free colustrum, look for "Kirkman?s Colostrum Gold."

Althoughh this article is about autism, there's a huge amount of

Kirkman?s Colostrum Gold?
http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/products/colostrum/print/col803p.html
..."A multiple filtration process makes Colostrum Gold?casein free at
detectable laboratory levels. Every batch is tested for casein by an
independent laboratory before it is shipped to Kirkman Laboratories.
Kirkman believes that Colostrum GoldŽ is the only casein free
colostrum available in the United States..."

I hope this answers your question, if you want further help, please
ask for a clarification before rating this answer and I'll be happy to
assist!
