Dear
I have a series of questions to do with unclaimed bank accounts.
I would like the questions answered for each of the following 4 countries
UK, Republic of Ireland, US and Canada. (I expect the answers for each
country to be different)
I understand this is a complex set of questions and if it is easier
for the researchers I can submit a separate question for each country.
I am also prepared to adjust my price if researchers can come up with
concrete answers.
Questions:
- After what period of inactivity is an account considered inactive?
- When the account becomes inactive does the money get transfered to the
country's central bank?
- What does the clearing bank, central bank or Government do to track down
the legitimate owner of the account?
- From the Bank's point of view is there anything to be gained by going
out of their way to track down the legitimate owners of unclaimed bank
accounts?
- Is there a public list/database of all unclaimed accounts either
accessible through the Web, or a CD one can get or a government office
one can visit?
- If someone learns about an inactive account they have what is the process
for them to recover the money?
- If someone is beneficiary to a deceased person and finds an unclaimed
account for the deceased person how to they go about reclaiming the money?
- What if the account is a company ? Is there a process by which the money
can be retrieved by the company? And what if the company is defunct?
Will the bank forever own the money in that case? Or can someone be
identified who has a legitimate claim to the money?
- Do banks, Central banks or governments ever employ third party agencies
to track down these accounts?
- Can third party individuals track down the owners/beneficiaries/companies
of unclaimed accounts and then charge the account owner a fee? Are there
rules, laws guidelines to control this type of activity?
- What approximately is the total amount held in unclaimed bank accounts?
Thanks
