Hi, Very few people in the Philippines speak "pure" Spanish as a native language. According to the Ethnologue database, fewer than 3,000 do. However, about 300,000 speak Chavacano, a Spanish-based creole, as a first language. Additionally, a significant amount of Spanish vocabulary has entered the national language, Tagalog (also called Filipino or Pilipino). Languages of Philippines http://www.ethnologue.com/show_country.asp?name=Philippines A directory of Spanish-language radio and TV stations (including some e-mail addresses and web sites) can be found on the following page: Spanish Radio and Television Stations in the Philippines http://filipinokastila.tripod.com/radtv.html Also, here are some web pages for two radio stations in the Chavacano-speaking area: DXTY http://www.philexport.org/philradio/network/nchome.htm#dxty DXKZ http://www.umbn.com.ph/dxkz-fm.html http://www.umbn.com.ph/ As you can see from the above directory, the stations that broadcast in Spanish do so on a part-time basis only. The following Spanish-language article from Revista Filipina indicates that there are no full-time Spanish-language broadcasters in the country. However, it indicates that a number of stations, particularly religious ones, broadcast some in Spanish. The article also speculates that Spanish will someday disappear from the island nation. To find the part about radio stations, do a browser search on the page for "emisora," the Spanish word for "radio station." Revista Filipina http://members.aol.com/farolan1/revinv98.html Google search terms used: filipinas emisora ://www.google.com/search?q=filipinas+emisora filipinas emisoras ://www.google.com/search?q=filipinas+emisoras spanish "radio stations" philippines ://www.google.com/search?hl=es&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&q=spanish+%22radio+stations%22+philippines Best wishes, mvguy |

There are a number of researchers at Google Answers that speak Spanish and live in Spanish speaking countries. |

Good answer, mvguy! I'd just like to add since I'm from the Philippines, there'll be fewer Spanish-speakers than you think! Spanish-speakers are most likely to be the elder people, who had Spanish as a requirement in their school curriculum, like my mom. I had Spanish as a foreign language elective, but I forgot all about it! Here in Manila, I notice nobody speaking Spanish at all! Most likely these speakers are in the provinces. We speak a lot of English too. If you come here, you might have the impression that you're in an extension of America. |

Thanks for the interesting comment. One of the TV stations where I live carries an hour or two of Philippine TV each afternoon. It's definitely an interesting linguistic experience to watch. |
