I need to make a web database application system to make a searchable
directory online, but I want to find a software that anybody with
basic knowledge of computing can create that search engine and
customize it. Would be much better if this software can include an
easy way to write, read, modify or update that database online with
user authentication.

Hello -

Alpha Software makes a database product which is the "only database to
win 5-star ratings from PC Magazine, C|Net, PC Pro and PC User"
according to the manufacturer's website. Version 6 is PC Magazine
Editor's Choice. Visit the following link to read more about this
software, a no-programming-required application for creating web-based
databases:

Web Application Server, version 6

Order from their online store for $699

askSam Web Publisher is another award-winning product "designed to let
you create and publish documents and databases on the Internet.
Manuals, regulatory texts, catalogs, legal texts, research notes,
marketing materials, and more... the askSam Web Publisher easily turns
any information into a searchable Web database..."

Read more about it here:

askSam Web Publisher

It's available for $1495 here:

The issue of authentication is address at this link:

http://www.asksam.com/show_document.asp?doc_handle=83887&file=faqs.ask&req2=password&last_doc=&doc_hand=8020
"...On the askSam Web server, we currently run MS Internet Information
System, which when combined with Windows NT, offers an enormous amount
of control as to who can access Web pages. NT can allow you to
restrict access to an askSam database or to an entire directory on a
user by user basis. When a user attempts to access a file or
directory, a prompt appears asking for user name and password..."

It appears their website is undergoing reconstruction, as a couple
links are currently unavailable.

Another alternative is to use a service such as Intranets.com, whereby
no investment is made on your part for hardware, software, or
maintenance of a local database. It's all done online:

"Intranets.com's collaboration suite is an online service, so there's
ZERO hardware or software for you to buy, install or maintain. Your
intranet can be set up in five minutes and your entire team, company
or organization will be productive the very same day -- avoiding the
investment of months that would be required to build and deploy your
own local collaboration solution. "

Im glad to know about Alpha Software, this is probably the one I have
to learn to start doing customization for my specific project. But
knowledge of programming and database programming will be required.

Hello -

Alpha Software, along with askSam and the others mentioned are
specifically touted as being "programming free" with regard to their
implementation. I specifically sought that out when reviewing the
options on the market. Hope one of them works out for you.
