Question ID: 537376
I have a Toshiba Satellite 1800-S253 in which the DVD drive has gone
bad. I am going to replace the drive with a CD or CDRW. I have built
desktops from scratch, but I have never opened a laptop case. There
are a myriad of screws on the bottom of the laptop case. Which ones
do I remove to get to the drive? Are there any another tricks I need
to know?

Howdy steveblarney-ga,

If you look on the bottom of your computer, do any of the holes have a small
arrow or triangle pointing to them? Thanks!

I have the unit in my lap upside down with the rear/connector end
facing me. Screws are labelled with numbers inside circles as follows,
starting at the middle of the edge away from me: Clockwise from
12:00, two screws labelled B25, right top corner B20, 1:00, a cover
held by F4, right corner closest to me (4:00?) two labelled B20, 7:00
edge an F6, left corner closest to me B20, with an F6 1" closer to
middle, and 1/3 and 2/3 up the left edge there is a B20 at 1/3 and F6
at 2/3 from back to front of unit. On the left center of the bottom
there is a hatch with two F4 screws. On the right center there is a
hatch with an F4 fastener, and adjacent to that toward the rear there
is a hatch with two *4 screws. These two screws are not regular
phillips, but a * shaped head. I hope this clarifies the situation.
Opening the case to see the lcd and key board, I see no screws there.
Thankls.

Howdy steveblarney-ga,

I am thinking that the DVD drive is actually beneath the keyboard in your
model of laptop. Even though the following is a different model than yours,
it shows the process of removing the keyboard rather nicely. Please look
at the following and see if the keyboard is removed in this manner. Thanks!

I looked at the link. The power on key on the satellite is a bar
about 1/16 wide and 1/2 inch long. It does not appear removable. I
removed the cap to the "I" key and there was nothing under it. It
does not appear that that's they way the keyboard comes loose. I am
leaving this afternoon on business and will not return until the 9th
or 10th of July, so (1) there is no time pressure to get this done,
and (2) I will not have access to my email. I hope this is not an
inconvenience to you. I will check your postings after I get back. I
do appreciate your help. Steve

I have returned and am available to continue our discussion. Thank
you for your patience. Please be advised that I live in an non-coastal
area which may be affected by Hurricane Danny, and if we lose power,
it could be out several days. If so, I will be delayed in answering
any posts you do. Thanks for your patience and indulgence. Steve

Welcome back Steve,

I appreciate your patience with this process.

Please take a look at the following PDF document:
http://www.toshibadirect.com/content/pc/b2c/Memory_Module_10-28-04_TAIS_version.pdf

Specifically look at the instructions for removing the keyboard for the
Tecra M1 on page 3-3.

From this Toshiba support web page is some detail on the removal of the
keyboard brace.
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlView.jsp?soid=458412

"Remove the keyboard brace by slipping your finger under a notch at the
end of the keyboard and carefully lifting up to release the six latches.
...
Remove the two screws retaining the keyboard.

Lift up the back of the keyboard, rotate it toward you and lay it face
down on the palm rest.

CAUTION: The keyboard is connected to the computer by a ribbon cable. Be
careful no to apply tension to this cable when you lift up the keyboard.
Do not try to disconnect this cable.

Warning! Never try to disconnect this cable. Disconnecting the cable may
result in damage to the components."

This Kingston PDF file mentions three screws on the bottom that need to
be removed before removing the keyboard.
