Question ID: 537451
I had surgery five years ago and developed a nerve disorder due to the
panacryl stitches that were used to secure my muscle in place never
disolved. After four years of physical therapy, multiple visits to the
pain clinic the stitches were taken out (still looking brand new) in
October 2004. Has there been any research done on the panacryl
stitches not disolving?

Hi lyndze,

I searched for Panacryl stitches sutures.

I wasn't able to locate any information other than the following. If
my findings are satisfactory for you, please post a clarification
asking me to post in the answer box.

[... "but I am curious to find out from others about a possible
connection of symptoms of PNE and suture that may have been used for a
surgical procedure that was done prior to the onset of your symptoms.
It seems as though the majority of posts have mentioned painful PNE
symptoms following surgery. I had a couple of operations, and after
learning that the suture did not dissolve as it should have done, I
had to have it removed and that is when the pain started!!! I learned
that the suture was taken off the market, but was not recalled. If it
would have been "recalled," the company would have been required to
notifiy the patients. The suture that was used in my case was
Panacryl, manufactured by Ethicon by J&J. After calling the company
for more inquiry, I spoke to the nurse (their company nurse) and she
said it was taken off the market in July, 2001. The reason that it was
was because it was not making enough money to continue to market it.
She would not provide any additional info. So, I was wondering if
anyone else had any similar issue of non-dissolving suture before
their pain started. I would appreciate any comments."
