Question ID: 537452
I was trying to query Google in every possible way to actually find
the text of the text of the minority and majority opinions for the
Supreme Court Decision on Eminent Domain. PLEASE TELL ME HOW I COULD
HAVE QUERIED GOOGLE FOR THIS. I found all sorts of articles -
everything but the actual text of the decsion.
This decision is beyond horrible and I want to read the Court's
reasoning for taking someone's home to build a hotel or . . .
whatever. It will be interesting to see the reactions of those in
congress who rushed to the nearest microphone to express their rage at
the potential intrusion into our "rights" by allowing a government
agency to just take a look at the books being checked out or purchased
by a terrorist suspect. Do you suppose that these same people will
rush to the nearest microphones to express their rage our right to own
property being given over to whatever private developer who talks a
city official into condeming our homes for a private hotel or whatever
they wish? I will hold my breath here.
The affect will most likely be that there will be a huge public
backlash against judges as we put unbelievable pressure on our US
Congressmen and Seantors. . . and . . . . we may get judges that may
be even too conservative for me.
The answer - the link to the text of the miniorty and majority
opinions on this decision AND your telling me how I could have queried
Google to find it myself :). Thanks

Would love to hear any of your opinions on this decision.

Howdy, Carolyn. It's nice to hear from you again.

I am very disturbed by this ruling. I live in an old house with a
scenic view overlooking a river. I bet it would make a great site for
a hotel or a restaurant, but I had rather hoped that the fact that the
property belongs to me and my husband would count for something. Now
I'm not so sure.

I believe this is what you're looking for:

http://straylight.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/04-108.ZO.html

There are five files(Syllabus, Opinion [ Stevens ]. Concurrence [
Kennedy ], Dissent [ O?Connor ], and Dissent [ Thomas ]. Each of the
files may be viewed as HTML or in PDF format.

If this fills the bill, I'll be glad to give you my search strategy.
If this isn't precisely what you want, or isn't in the form you seek,
please let me know a bit more about your needs.

Hello Pink! I hope you are well and it will be so fun to think of you
sitting on a porch rocker, looking out over the river - while I sit on
our balcony overlooking the intercoastal and the Gulf .... that is,
unless or until????

Absolutely - this is exactly what I wanted for an answer + your wisdom
on how to query to have found it. I will save the site for the future
but, I would like to learn how you sorted to find it. It seems that
there is so much out there that my Google searches are netting me less
and less, rather than more. Please close the question but also, I
would love to hear the comments of some of the other smart researchers
- especially those who think that this ruling might be a good
thing?????? Of course, I could be asking for an oxy-moran here :)
Thanx for taking the question Pink

I'm glad to have been able to help you find what you were looking for.
I have reposted the link below:

Cornell Legal Information Institute: KELO V. NEW LONDON (04-108)
http://straylight.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/04-108.ZO.html

Here's how I turned it up.

First I did a search for a news story about the decision, so that I
could get the exact name of the case:

Google News Search: "supreme court" "eminent domain"
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=%22supreme+court%22+%22eminent+domain%22&btnG=Search+News

That search led me to this page, which provided the name (Kelo v. City
of New London):

Statement of Ralph Nader on Supreme Court Eminent Domain
http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=49368

I then performed this Google search, which took me to the Legal
Information Center page providing the text of the court's opinion and
the dissenting opinions:

Google Web Search: "supreme court" "kelo v. city of new london"

I am astounded to find myself on the same side of an issue as Ralph
Nader. That doesn't happen often these days. ;-)

Very best regards,
pinkfreud

The decision was terrible. It has been a pretty hot topic around the
smoking area since it came out. Did see this article this AM and
thought you may enjoy it.

This probably won't happen, but we can only hope.
