Question ID: 537479
I want to install Perl on my computer which runs windows 2000.

I do not have a compiler and don't know:
1) which to get
2) how to use them
3) what they are
4) if it's really needed

I am proficient with a keyboard and mouse, basic computer skills and a
few programs but have absolutely no programming knowledge.

To answer this question you must assist me 'step by step', or as
needed until Perl is installed on my computer. At this time the
question will be considered answered.

So far I have:
 -downloaded from the page http://www.perl.com/download.csp
the following file labeled "DOWNLOAD Stable Release from
CPAN/src - Get source for Unix and Windows systems"
          http://www.perl.com/CPAN/src/stable.tar.gz

-I have extracted all the files to a folder labeled perl-5.8.7 on my
desktop. (I assume they are "unzipped").

-It's a little difficult to know which file to read first, but my best
guess is one called "install" that I have opened in notepad.

-I read down to where it says "Run configure".
 It does not elaborate on:
-if "configure" should be followed by an extension or not.
    -how to run it.
When I click on a file called "configure" without any extensions and
has the symbol for what I think of as a program, a blank window pops
up for about 1-2 seconds with a black background and then disappears.
It does not go through any of the processes stated in the install file
I have opened and am trying to follow.

I've alphebetized my files and folders in both winzip, and the new
"perl-5.8.7" folder that I created and see a diferent quantity of
folders with various extensions titled "configure".

in the file perl-5.8.7 I have
configure
configure (with program symbol)
configure.gnu

in winzip I have:
configure
configure.bat (with program symbol)
configure.com (with program symbol)
configure.gnu

I've tried running the configure file from both the winzip folder and
the perl-5.8.7 and got similar results.

That's as far as I got.

(In case no one helps, should I have asked this in goole answer's
computer/programming or computer/software?)

Hi

What you want is to download the Windows binary:

http://www.perl.com/download.csp#win32
(ie, ActivePerl)

Now, the steps you went through would also work if you have a gcc compiler
installed (configure looks for a gcc compiler). But why go through
the trouble of compiling when you can just download the binary?

Another alternative is to download cygwin (www.cygwin.com) which includes perl.

"What you want is to download the Windows binary:

I have navigated to this page:
http://www.activestate.com/Products/Download/Download.plex?id=ActivePerl
and am downloading the "windows/mli" download.

In the right column near the top it says:

Windows Installer 2.0+ is required for Windows.
download for 9x/Me
download for NT

I asume I need this too?
If so which on is for windows 2000, I always forget, Is it the NT or Me?

Thanks,
John

studboy-ga ,livioflores-ga, google answer staff

I'm going in the direction studboy started me on but am at a dead end...

I'd like to work with someone who is familiar with the process they
are taking me through. Can you take me 'step by step' as needed
through the process of installing " ActivePerl"? Are you available?
"waht hours?" How long typically should I expect to wait for a reply?
I must work with someone who is fairly resonsive.

I am stuck at this point, and don't know if I'll continue in the same
direction with active perl, or start in a new and easier direction?

From this page http://www.activestate.com/Products/Download/Download.plex?id=ActivePerl
:

"Windows Installer 2.0+ is required for Windows.
download for 9x/Me
download for NT

I assume I need this too?

I downloaded the NT version, and when I went to open it it prompts
"error: the specified service already exists". So I asssume it's
already there.

I have now downloaded and installed the "windows/mli" file:

The person who answers this question is going to have to help me work
through the "Documentation" in "Active Perl" with some jargon I don't
understand.

Easier options still considered at this point.

John,

You don't need to do *ANYTHING ELSE* after you run the MSI installation
(that's the beauty of windows). You're done installing--Look in your
C:\PERL directory. It should already be there.

Also, activestate has 24x7 support--if you decide to use it:

studboy,

Yes, I know see a directory in c:\perl . There are 4 folders labled:
bin
eg
html
lib
site

"You're done installing--Look in your
C:\PERL directory. It should already be there."

What exactly should be there?

i.e.

Like I said from the begining I'm not a programer, and I'm just a
little emabaresaed now to say I wouldn't know perl if it was up and
running in front of me. I've read what it can do hence the question.
In which folder, and which file do I have to click on to 'launch'
PERL?

Hi johnjri1,

If I understand you, you've downloaded ActivePerl but you haven't
installed it yet. By default all features of ActivePerl are installed
on Windows 2000, you don't need to download anything extra. After
downloading ActivePerl, all's you'll need to do is click on the .msi
installation file.

This is for the ActivePerl 5.6.1, build 638 but installation would be the same:
"Double-click on the ActivePerl .msi installation file (the file you
just downloaded) in Windows Explorer. Follow any instructions that it
shows. Use any default settings it may ask you about. If it asks you
to reboot the computer, click "Yes"."

I hope that helps!

It is installed.

studboy-ga, you may consider the question answered.

Hummer showed me that. My situation in case you are curious is I got
a book with interesting projects, but after buying, (and reading 20
pages) the author tells me the entire book is based on perl
(something I know absolutely nothing about).

Most programs like excel, or internet explorer, you can see and are
more evident, hence the confusion on my part.

Thanks,
John

If you can't find the .msi file, try looking in the c:\perl.tmp folder
or search for it. hummer

you guys! Good work, studboy. Sincerely, hummer

Big time thanks to you studboy! I have a feeling I may be posting a
question about installing modules, perhaps than I will have a chance
to make it up to you.

Thankyou too hummer, for the clarification.
