I had a friend back in college who told me her oppinion:

**a non-exact quote** God created man with an insatiable desire for
more and more. This drives us naturally to want more and more stuff
unless we realize that the stuff will never satisfy us, then the only
source for fulfillment is God.

I don't claim to know all the intentions of God, but it makes sense to
me that if he made us so that we could be satisfied by earthly stuff
then we'd feel no need for him.

Because that "stuff" makes commerce, business and life more efficient
and enjoyable and oftentimes become necessities in moderen life plus
man is always looking to expand the breadth his knowledge which leads
to more things to have.
Do we "need" cars? No, but they sure make getting around easier. Do
we "need" computers? No, but they make business keeping easier, allow
us to model and forecase weather and economic situations. Do we need
phones? NO, but you should get the picture by now.

And by the way, does China "need" more cars and factories, or for that
matter any country? Guess it's just not the U.S then, is it?

One of the traditional Seven Deadly Sins is "Avarice." Greed has
existed throughout history. To single out the United States for its
greed is to ignore the lust for power, goods, and wealth that is (and
has always been) present throughout the world in most human beings.
