I want to sell a fairly valuable piece of jewelry. One convenient
online buyer is Lippincott, found at thingswebuy.com.

I'm supposed to send them the piece. They evaluate it and make me an
offer. If I accept, they keep the piece and send the money. If I
refuse, they send back the piece. If it really works like that,
everything would be fine.

It occurred to me, though, that they could replace the stones and send
it back, and I wouldn't be able to tell.

I started googling for feedback on thingswebuy.com, looking for
comments, good or bad, from real people who have done business with
them. But I can't find much of anything. The lack of real talk is
disturbing.

The question is, does Lippincott / thingswebuy.com have a real reputation?

Hello carbon-ga,

I?ve found quite a bit of information about this privately held
company. It seems to be a family operation that has been in business
for a long time. It?s listed in the Better Business Bureau and there
have been no complaints against it. It?s officers have been quoted in
the trade and business press. They seem to be completely legitimate.

All the best.

Out of the mouths of dental patients -- and sometimes a corpse -- comes treasure.

But each week, hundreds of packets of dental debris arrive in the
Wynnewood office of estate-jewelry buyer Lippincott Inc. Washing out
of patients' mouths and flowing through the mail, the gold nuggets are
the castoffs of the dental world.

At Lippincott's office, two workers clean and sort the pieces, which
are then shipped off to refineries around the country. The refineries
melt and purify them into commercial-grade bricks for resale on the
open market.

Hello carbon-ga,

Thank you for the kind words and five stars.

You said, "I don't think it was useful to include information found at the site
of the company I was asking about, because if they were underhanded,
they'd just be lying on their site. Other than that the answer was
good."

Let me explain my rationale for looking at what the company website
said. Researching any company it is important to look at what the
company says about itself, what capabilities they claim and what
credentials they offer. Then it's important to go out in the real
world and verify whether the claims are confirmed by reliable sources.

If someone says, "I'm an award-winning chemistry professor" on their
own site it sounds good but doesn't give you much information to go
on. If you then go and find out where the award came from you have
something to go on. You may find the person was a professor at a
prestigious university or at a diploma mill. You may find they won a
coveted industry honor or a self-serving award from an organization
that offers an award to anyone for a prize.

Starting with whatever the company/individual claims about themselves
is a good base line for a search. It's very difficult to find anything
on private companies if they want to hide. If a company's statements
about themselves on their web site are verified by reports in the
trade press, attendance at appropriate conference or activities in the
community, you have something to confirm their claims.

I hope you don't think I'm arguing with you. I'm sharing some basic
company research techniques.

All the best.
