I have a Sony DCR-TRV320 camcorder that I would like to send signals
via a IrDA device to ?record? and ?stop-recording.? The IrDA device
will need to run on a Windows .Net platform. I have no idea where to
start my research or how to ?talk? to the Sony camcorder. I need a
point in the right direction, any suggestions?

That is reinventing the wheel - they already have remote internet
video recorders. The above approach would be more costlier (in
time/labor) than existing products. (see Smarthome or Lorex)

What you will need are the code for the Sony Model you have. Then you
will need to get the Patterns for Record & Stop.

You can get a Plug in IrDA device for your desktop, then free software
on the net to have it control the Recorder- Most PC's have a 4 prong
jack inside for IrDA.
It will be a reciever and transmitter combo. If you have the remote
for the recorder. You can simply shine the remote at the PC-IrDA and
record the codes. first for Record.
then for Stop
These codes will be used for the ASPX application to be developed. A
web page would have a record button, and stop button.

The Framework will consist of:
a small program written in VB.net (usually .ASPX) to communicate with
the remote PC and with the recorder. This will send an event to the
application to tell it to record. When you are done recording, send a
Stop signal. Most of this can be done with. ASPX (Active Server Page
Executable).
