You might want to have a look at this FDA update report (May 2005) on
counterfeit drugs:

http://www.fda.gov/oc/initiatives/counterfeit/update2005.html

There is an actual list of recent counterfeit cases towards the end of the report.

The original 2004 report from FDA contains additional information and
cases, and can be found here:

http://www.fda.gov/oc/initiatives/counterfeit/report02_04.html

Let me know if this is what you needed. And if it's not, let us know
what additional information would make for a complete answer.

pafalafa, bobbie7 - i had seen the fda document - and yes thats very
pertinent. and the second reference by bobbie is also very good -
thank you.

now i am hoping to get the sources that have led to these reports by
which i mean - info of the following nature as an example -
"Procrit, with its high cost, has been a target of counterfeiters. For
example, an estimated 110,000 vials of Epogen (costing about $22 each)
were relabelled and sold as high-strength Procrit at about $445/vial,
with the counterfeiters taking in about $46 million before shut down
by authorities in May 2002. Only less than 10% of the counterfeit
product was ever recovered, meaning as many as 25,000 patients may
have received counterfeit product. "

incidentally there is also a v nice site at the National Association
of Boards of Pharmacy (NABPand a good article - "Counterfeit Drugs:
A Real Cause for Alarm by Monica Holmberg, Report on The National
Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP)" covers this well - including
the listing they provide.

if indeed it turns out that it is possible for some researcher to do
this type of analysis - and requires more input/time please indicate
and i will glady comply as required. also i do have quite a bit of
info that i can share on this too - if necessary

thank you

I think most of the information you're looking for -- to the extent
that it exists -- can be found in the links at this search results
page:

://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2003-43,GGLD:en&q=site%3Awww%2Efda%2Egov+counterfeit++inurl%3Anews

It would take more than $20 worth of effort to sort through these and
extract the information of use to you, but with the link above, you
may want to take a crack at this on your own.

Let me know how that works out.

pafalafa - u have found an excellent set of sites and yes they will
have the appropriate info that i want. i guess just going through the
last two years fda documents as your search pulled out is a good idea.
basically we should be able to come to the "case" that they caught and
derive the info we want - how much of what was counterfeited? how- if
possible namely it was vials or blister packs or howsoever - and the
estimated dollar value associated with the damage as well as liability
losses . if required we can discuss this in more detail - can you
please arrange to do this? how can i pay/ set this up with you and
what do you feel is the right value for such an effort??
thanks

gautamthor-ga,

Thanks for your response.

Under ordinary circumstances I would be more than happy to suggest a
price for the work to be done, and to undertake it myself. However,
you have caught me in the midst of some pre-holiday-weekend,
mid-house-construction madness, and I simply don't think I'll have an
opportunity in the next few days to attend to this.

May I suggest that you post a message here asking bobbie7-ga (who was
the first to respond to your question, with her comment, below) to
perhaps pick up the ball on this.

If she can't do it, there are many other researchers who might be able
to assist you.

If the question remains unanswered in a week or so, I will try to get back to it.

All the best...and thanks.

Hello Gautam,

Is this the sort of information you're looking for?

Thanks,

Counterfeit contraceptive patches
Audience: Reproductive healthcare professionals and consumers
FDA and Johnson and Johnson Co. of Raritan, NJ are warning the public
about an overseas internet site selling counterfeit contraceptive
patches that contain no active ingredients. The counterfeit
contraceptive patches were promoted as Ortho Evra transdermal patches,
which are FDA approved, and made by Johnson and Johnson's Ortho-McNeil

bobbie7 - hello - look i think we are on the right track but i can see
that the search and requirements will need to be enlarged and
appropriately set up and dealt with.

heres what i am hoping to finally achieve - there will be a list of
the top 10 or 15 couunterfeited pharamaceuticals in the United States
that have caused public concern - there should be information of the
following nature (- and this is an example of Procrit) -
"Procrit, with its high cost, has been a target of counterfeiters. For
example, an estimated 110,000 vials of Epogen (costing about $22
each)were relabelled and sold as high-strength Procrit at about
$445/vial,with the counterfeiters taking in about $46 million before
shut down by authorities in May 2002. Only less than 10% of the
counterfeit product was ever recovered, meaning as many as 25,000
patients may have received counterfeit product. "

how many vials? costing how much? - how they were altered ? what were
they sold for? how much did the counterfeiters make? did they get
caught?

now ofcourse these are many many questions and i doubt that we can get
the answers to all of them for everything but this can be the "grid"
we want to fill up - with each product we have selected.

now its not possible that we will pick up this type of detail as we
delve into this but that is where i am headed.

the fda web sites are a good start. we get to know what is being
counterfeited. then we got to backtrace to each item's history to find
out the info we need. which company? what kind of loss did the company
incur because of this counterfeiting event?

theres a list out by NABP - that warns of the potential drugs that we
should watch out for. i can send that list as it will give us all the
targets if you want or you can fish it out on the net.

thanks for helping out - you'll see theres a lot of interesting info
that needs to be accessed and it'll be fun to pull it out with your
support! i look forward to your input.

Dear Gautam,

I think I´ll pass on this one as this question is out of my area of
expertise. I´m sure another researcher will be able to find the
information you require.

Thanks,
Bobbie

i apologise that my clarification was not succinct.

i would like to have info on the actual damages so as to speak....
that x amount of bottles of the counterfeited product were confiscated
- for blah blah productor y number of blister packs of blah blah were
intercepted and ----

the lists must be created on that type of informational basis - thats
the level of detail i would like for the purported counterfeited
product. thanks
