How many women's athletic scholarships and what sports do the following schools have: University of Virginia James Madison University College of William and Mary Virginia Polytechnic University (Virginia Tech) - Blacksburg What women's sports are least competitive for scholarships? There are thousands of girls playing soccer, but only a handful playing lacrosse. I would assume that if the number of full scholarships for a women's soccer team were the same for a lacrosse team, a lacrosse scholarship would be less competitive. I'm looking for an article or study or something to give me a rough idea. Thanks | |

http://www.womenssportsfoundation.org/cgi-bin/iowa/issues/geena/record.html?record=862 This article is from 2002 but is still accurate. There are more scholarships for men than women. Title IX has improved opportunities but not equality in numbers. Recruiting for womens university scholarships is not a process, it is an individual experience. Any university with a major football program will allocate fewer scholarships for all other sports, mens and womens. Private, elite universities may favor one sport over another rather than spread resources too thin. So the track or swim team may receive more scholarships than the others. Large rosters require more players. Team sports may get more press but individual sports may get just as many scholarships. It is about the student athlete's skills and the university's needs. Also, small division three schools don't give scholarships, but financial aid may be a method to a better education. And NAIA schools may be small and able to give out scholarships. Selling parents and students on sports camps and elite club teams has become big business but may not produce results promised. University coaches want maximum skills with minimum trouble. A solid GPA with no personal problems is a good balance to athletic skill. Contact the schools you are interested in. Talk to admissions and to the coaches. The more research done in advance the better prepared you are when contacting them. http://www.readingeagle.com/blog/editorials/archives/2005/06/sometimes_you_m_1.html This article demonstrates the extent of political wrangling over limited resources. Mens wrestling coaches see opportunities fading and take aim at Title IX among other things. The point in receiving a scholarship is that it is a means to an education. Does the school have the academic program you want? Is there a career in the end? |
