Can I start a petition about a grouchy, unfair, rotton neighbor who complains about every little whimper that our dogs make ?? What can I do to fight back ?? we've bought expensive "bark collars" for our dogs, and we're very nice quiet neighbors. But this one man just keeps being unreasonable and calling the police about every little thing. what rights do I have as a reasonable responsible dog-owner ?? | |

Hi zannysue, I wouldn't take aggressive action just yet. It's difficult to overcome a pesky neighbor, and patience is best. My idea is to make the police your friend. I would go around the neighboorhood and talk to all your close neighbors. Be VERY nice, ask if your dog bothers them. From those that are willing, ask for letters of reference specifically stating that your dog is not a nuisance. Then, when the police come, show them the letters. Personally typed, signed letters with contact information (phone, address) would be helpful. These letters will also work in your favor in court, because if he does not stop complaining, the police will have to decide who to believe. Be patient, persistent, and accomodating. Win them over. There's also the old adage, ..."Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer..." Invite the lonely guy over for a BBQ, let the dog get to know him, and he --the dog, perhaps he will soften up... ~~Cynthia PS: There's lots of fine Researchers AND Commenters here that will come along and give more suggestions. |

The police very quickly become aware of who the cranks are. But if you *really do* have yappy dogs who bark *all the time*, especially when you are away, then you need to reconsider your position. |
