I have heard so much about song fingerprinting technology and all the
possibilities for application. One was that a listener could use the
technology to find new (at least to the listener) artists that were
comparable in style or song. Is this available or is there software I
could buy to so this. Everything I have found in my searches are
companies that are trying to use this technology to stop pirating,
help me out here! Thanks.

Try Moodlogic, an application that relies on user input about songs.
However, it only works on files already in your computer.

MusicMatch's RadioMX service doesn't use fingerprinting as far as I
know, but has been spectacular at giving me new artists to listen to.
You create personal "stations" based on lists of up to 20 artists, and
these stations play a variety of similar music. Very cool.

It may not perhaps fit what you are looking for, but I know of sites
that let you (legally) listen to music for free, and then suggests a
list of music that others who frequent the same songs you do also
listen to. This has been helpful, at least for me. I have mostly
enjoyed the suggested songs, except for one or two odd ones that pop
up and seem totally unrelated. The best part of it is that the music
videos come with the songs, and they are all really big artists,
grouped by genre. (There is Tool, Ozzy, Enya, NoDoubt, Country stuff,
dance stuff, jazz, everything...) Be warned, though, that this site
requires a decent internet connection, and also has decent safegaurds
against illegally downloading the music. Would this interest you? I
know it is not fingerprinting...lets just call it profiling. ;)

Audiogalaxy.com is also good at suggesting new artists based on your
current music collection.
