O.K Here's a guess. Kindergartners are typically five years old when
they start, and they leave kindergarten for first grade.

Good morning, ruthaliceashley,

I found a reference to "land in fives" in a song called Empty Handed:

"I carry all of the dice that must be thrown
The chance that they will land in fives..."

Here's the URL:
http://www.kieranbutler.com/wst_page6.html

So perhaps you're shooting craps? If the dice explanation is correct,
perhaps someone else knows how "take off in 1st" relates.

Good luck,
revbrenda1st

Hi again, ruthaliceashley,

I believe I've found a connection for "take off in 1st".

According to this glossary at
http://casinogambling.about.com/library/blcraplingo.htm

"Player Position: There are 8 player positions on either side of a
standard Craps Table. They are numbered 1-8 from the Stickman to
either Dealer. This is the way that dealers sequence pay-offs to
players on winning wagers AND the way that dealers positon player
wagers on the table lay-out."

and...

"Your First (2nd, 3rd etc.) Refers to the way that Dealers reference
the Playing Position of Players when paying off wagers or making
change."

I can't find an 'official' definition for the 'fives' part of the
question, but it appears that landing them is not a good thing.

Since I have no experience with this game, I'm a bit shy to post my
two comments as an official answer.

Regards,
rev
