Dear Wolfy

MTV is a market leader in this area in Europe, so excluding it poses a
?problem?. It is worth mentioning, though, that MTV-Europe **does
not** target mostly Western Europe: most Western European countries
(and some Eastern European countries as well) have their own MTV
channel, in their own language and with a combination of local musical
material, original language shows as well as international MTV
material dubbed or otherwise translated to their respective languages.
MTV has local stations (MTV and sometimes also MTV2 or VH1) in France,
Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia,
Spain, and the UK. In addition, there is a regional station for all of
the Nordic countries (operating from Sweden).

You can see a full list of European based MTV stations, and links to
their sites, here:
MTV International
http://www.mtv.com/mtvinternational/

MTV?s main competitor in the European music content providers market
was VIVA, a German channel. However, Viva has been partially purchased
by Viacom, which has holdings in MTV as well, so strictly speaking, it
would be difficult to call it a full competitor, It is still dominant
in the European market, though, and has several local channels (that
is, music channels outside Germany). Other owners include Time Warner
and Vivendi.

The main company is
Viva Media AG
<http://www.vivamediaag.com/mediaag/en/>

Viva Media AG has several TV stations across Europe:
VIVA
<http://www.viva.tv/> (Germany)
Viva Plus
< http://www.vivaplus.tv/> (Germany)

Regarding Viva Germany and Viva Plus Germany, their website reports:
?Since September 2003, VIVA has been recorded among the official
evaluation results of the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Fernsehforschung"
(AGF/GfK) and reaches an average market share of 1.7 % among the
target group of viewers between 14 and 29 years (Source: AGF/GfK
Fernsehforschung, pc#tv aktuell, at all levels, television panel
(Germany + EU), entire FRG. Basis: January 1 ? June 30, 2004.

?Since September 2003, VIVA PLUS has been recorded among the official
evaluation results of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Fernsehforschung
(AGF/GfK) and reaches an average market share of 1.2 % among the
target group of viewers between 14 and 29 years. VIVA PLUS has thus
turned into Germany's leading pure music channel (Source: AGF/GfK
Fernsehforschung, pc#tv aktuell, at all levels, television panel
(Germany + EU), entire FRG. Basis: January 1 ? June 30, 2004.

Non-German channels:
Poland ? Viva Polska

Netherlands ? The Box

Hungary - Viva

Switzerland
<http://www.vivatv.ch/> or Viva Swiss <http://www.viva-swizz.ch/>

Except for the MTV local stations, these are usually the largest
stations in terms of unique market share in their respective
countries.

Another large player in this market is RTL Group. RTL (Radio
Television Luxembourg) is today almost solely owned by the German
media giant Bertelsmann AG. RTL Group owns several national channels
providing music content.

In France, a large music videos content provider owned by RTL is M6
(Metropole Télévision). M6 has three music channels: M6 ? Music Rock,
M6 Music Black and M6 Music. Alongside MTV-France, they are powerful
players in the French market.

provide relatively a lot of music video content:

Germany
=====
Except for MTV-Germany and Viva channels, there are also some smaller
music content providers in Germany. GoldStar TV GmbH & Co. KG owns
three TV stations (provided through the ?Premiere? satellite
packages): GoldStar (targeted at people aged 30+, contains ?Deutsche
Schlager? ? German hits music ? and its international equivalents);
Hit24TV (targeting an audience aged 30-50); and Heimatkanal (targeting
people aged 50+ and playing ?Volksmusik? ? the German
folkloristic/country music).

France
====
Except for RTL?s M6 channels and MTV-France, Lagardère group is a
third player, owning two TV networks, only one of them is totally
relevant, MCM, operating both in France and Belgium.
MCM
< http://www.mcm.net/>
According to the company?s website:
?MCM?s site leads in the Broadcast Media category among 15- to
34-year-olds (Ipsos, Dec 2004). A few figures:
?	2.7 million visitors per month (Cyberestat Jan-May 2005).
?	10.1 million page-views per month (Cyberestat Jan-May 2005).
?	79% of 15- to 34-year-olds (Ipsos Dec 2004).
?	57% of women (Ipsos Dec 2004).
?	70% of the French population outside Paris (Ipsos Dec 2004). ?

The other is a bit off-topic, and might be only of general interest to you:
Mezzo is the only channel in Europe playing solely Jazz and Classical
music. Mezzo is owned by Lagardère. Music video content there is
accordingly in these music styles:

Finally, another player in Italy is Music Box Italia

Belgium/Netherlands
=============
Alongside MTV Netherlands (mentioned above), the main player in the
Dutch and Belgian market, The Music Factory (TMF) is also partially
owned by MTV/Viacom, that bought the channel after it has beaten them
in the rating charts.

Spain
===
Except for local MTV station, there are several other providers in Spain.

Sol Musica, Sol Musica (Spain) (http://www.solmusica.com/) ? plays
mostly Spanish pop music. Owned by Multi-Canal, a Spanish pay-TV
broadcaster. ?Multicanal?s shareholders are: Disney / ABC Intl.

but also sit-coms and reality-shows (both MTV-style) and sometimes
also movies. ZTV is owned by ?Modern Times?, a Swedish media group.
