Question ID: 53952
Am trying to find grave of Corporal George Mate, a Fijian serving with
the British Army, who was killed in a traffic accident in Germany
circa 1965 -66.
George was a Corporal in 207 Signal Squadron attached to 7th Armoured
Brigade.
He was based in Soltau and, I think, will be buried somewhere in the
Hanover region.

Please explain why you want to find where the grave is located. Do
you know for sure that he was buried in Germany or are you just
speculating about that? Would you have any idea of how old he was at
the time of death or approximately what year he was born?

Since this request is related to genealogical research, you can visit
the website www.rootsweb.com, click on the MESSAGE BOARDS link in the
top middle section of the website, then type in the "FIND A MESSAGE
BOARD" box the term "FIJI" and you will see a link come up entitled
"BOARDS--LOCALITIES--OCEANIA--FIJI--GENERAL". Click on THAT link and
you can enter a search message that gives a brief description that you
are looking for information on the grave site and other
obituary/relatives information about George Mate, a previous resident
of Fiji. The genealogical researchers can then look up his military
records and other data to get you the burial location.

A medical center in Fiji has been named after him, so they must have
thought very highly of his military service. I will provide that
contact information in a future posting.

Since the following building is named after him, you may want to write
to the center to see if there is a staff member who can put you in
touch with his surviving family, who can probably give you information
about the obituary and the gravesite. Please ask your local post
office what the country code is for Fiji, since you may need to add
that to the bottom of the mailing address.

     ATTENTION: GEORGE MATE MEDICAL CENTRE
     MILITARY FORCES HEADQUARTERS
     QUEEN ELIZABETH BARRACKS
     P. O. BOX 102
     MADDOCKS ROAD
     SUVA, FIJI
     (COUNTRY CODE WOULD GO HERE)

If you have no luck, here is a secondary source for checking. I have
been informed by a German genealogist that the newspaper "Willkommen
Beim Heide-Kurier" has an archives and a website (www.heide-kurier.de)
and you may want to contact them by mail or by e-mail to ask if they
can search for the obituary. However, you must correspond with them
in German, so you may want to pay a local translation company a small
fee to convert your letter from English to German.
