Sherman stated in his "Memoirs" that he estimated that the fatal
cannon was about 800 yards from Polk's position, and that Jackson
estimated the range at 600 yards. Other accounts say the fatal shot
was half-a-mile away. Can the actual distance be now calculated
scientifically ? My question is: What is the scientifically calculated
distance between the Union gun emplacements and Polk's position on
Pine mountain ?

It is known that the fatal Parrott rifled cannon was in the 5th
Indiana Artillery Battalion, so I thought the two military positions
could be located on a map, and the distance calculated by measuring
the map according to its scale or key.
