Hi,

For the past few years, I have been using a ?Technology Forecast? book
to teach a seminar on emerging computing and communication
technologies.

The book was published annually by Global Technology Center of
PricewaterhouseCoopers (www.pwc.com/techcentre). Basically, each
edition of the book covered about a dozen technologies that experts
expected to be taking off in the next few years. Each chapter covered
one such technology and provided a technical and business overview of
the technology along with a summary of the key industry players that
supplied/developed the technology and a forecast about its usage.
Here is a link to a sample book page:

Unfortunately, the publisher (PWC) decided to curtail the publication
of this book. Could you please suggest other books that offer similar
content? In other words, I am looking for a printed publication that
is published periodically (annually or more frequently) that covers
emerging IT (information technologies) that are currently being
adopted by businesses (or are likely to be adopted in the future).

Please note that I am not interested in books that are not updated at
least annually. Also, I am not interested in books that focus on a
specific subset of IT only (e.g. ?Annual Review of Neural Network
Technology?).

Thanks in advance!

Please note that I am not interested in a book (or a web-site,
journal, or conference proceedings) that summarize research studies
(conceptual or empirical) on topics that are related to the discipline
of information systems (including studies of specifici techologies).
Rather, I am looking for a book that summarizes the technologies
themselves (and related business applications). In other words, I am
looking for a professional (not academic) publication that can serve
as a "primer" on these technologies.

:)

There are a couple "futurists" who update books with some regularity,
though not necessarily with a technology focus. However, you may be
better with a collection of essays or research programs from something
like the Institute for the Future:

Would you find it valuable for a researcher to put together a
collection of potential authors, essays and resources as an Answer?

Best regards,

Dear Omnivorous,

While that may be an alternative way to find relevant information,
this is not what I am looking for. What I need is a print book
(single source) that covers just emergining information technologies
(not non-IT ones).

I don't want the answer itself to be the source (by containing a list
of references to studies/essays) - the answer should simply identify a
suitable "trade" book.

Thank you for working on this question,
W2C

Perhaps another researcher can find something that fits better than
I've been able to.

However, I might suggestion CIO.com, the IDG magazine that covers
technology issues. They routinely look at the short-term and
long-term outlook for information technology, in issues such as this:
"Fast Forward 2010: The Fate of I.T."
http://www.cio.com/archive/121503/index.html

Their website is a wealth of resources. (You don't have to respond to
this note -- I just wanted to make sure that you were aware of the
comments via e-mail.)

Best regards,

Thank you for your attempt to answer this question. Unfortunately,
the CIO.com info is already dated (it was published in 2003) - that's
part of the reason I want a book that is revised at least annually.

Thanks again,
W2C
