Where can I find desktop images good enough for the 23" HD cinema
display - 1920x1200. Specifically, wherever the monitor is displayed
in stores, I saw at least 2 images i'm interested in: 1) Skyline at
dusk of Hong Kong (as seen on
box the monitor came in); 2) picture of what looks like several empty
old
pharmaceutical bottles. I'm more interested in the second image.
Again, interested in HD images well suited for the 23" cinema display
( I prefer close ups). Also, looking for close ups of flowers, etc.
Please help. I saw all these images on display wherever the monitor
is displayed, and they look fantastic. Apple is of no help - they
simply
stated that these images came with the powerG4 - which mine does not.

Any professional stock images on Kodak Photo CD format will meet your
resolution requirements. The resolution is up to 2048 x 3072 for
standard Photo CD, professional formats go even higher. For a brief
overview from Kodak, see:

http://www.kodak.com/global/en/professional/products/storage/pcdMaster/aboutPCD.shtml

One of the largest photo stock sites is Corbis (
http://www.corbis.com/ ), and a search on "antique bottles" (you can't
be too specific or you miss images that are titled poorly) returned
216 images, some of which looked to me to be old medicine bottles:

A terrific guide to the online photo archives and stock libraries and
agencies by Robert Helbig can be found on the Subterrane site at:

http://www.subterrane.com/imagegalleries.shtml

However, I have the feeling you wanted the specific images Apple is
using rather that a method of finding substitutes, so I'll post this
as a comment in hopes somebody can chase down the originals for you.

What operating system are you running? If you have 8.6-9.x installed
somewhere on your computer, look in System Folder->Appearance->Desktop
Pictures->Photos for a file called "Bottles". Alternatively, you can
search for it on your computer with Sherlock.

If you have the OS 8.6-9.x install disk the images should be there as
well, although they might be compressed into one of the tomes. If
this is the case, there's a program called TomeViewer that will let
you look at the contents of tome files.

Hello.

http://www.digitalblasphemy.com/
carries beautiful desktop pictures of the size you want, or that can
be stretched and still look wonderful. (like the 1600x1200 size
images)

However, images of that size are only available (I think) to subscribed
members. The owner's membership fee runs for one year and is very
reasonable. He provides tons of pictures to choose from does very
fine work. I highly recommend Digital Blasphemy.

You do not have to subsribe, however, to download many of the 1152x864
or smaller images, and he provides tons of beautiful free images to
those who do not wish to become a member.

Additionally, I also highly recommend Webshots, at
http://www.webshots.com/homepage.html
which carries daily photos and millions of user-submitted desktop
images that are searchable by subject.
Some categories include:
  3D Art
   Animals
   Cats & Dogs
   Fine Art
   Flowers & Gardens
   Holidays
   Illustrations
   Military
   Nature Scenes
   Ocean Life
   People
   Religion
   Space
   Specialty
   Sports
   Transportation
   Travel
and I believe that these will automatically stretch to fit your
desktop and should look quite nice. I have, however, never used this
software on a 1920x1200 display, but instead have used the software on
a 19" monitor with a small display. The software is downloadable at
this site and manages the images that you choose to download and keeps
them compressed until they are used, in order to save space. You can
pull up the software and it will display the beautiful pictures that
you choose to download in a small thumbnail format so that you can
pick and choose and sort them by category. It also has the option to
use these as screensavers, to rotate them daily, or even to turn them
into black and white pictures, to give an artsy feel. The flowers are
beautiful and they use really top rate photographers. You may wish to
check them out.

GOOD LUCK and I hope this helps!,
