That would be a rather tedious and not very fruitful task. The list of top home run hitters in MLB is dominanted by modern day players. Most kept the same uniform number throughout their careers. A few changed numbers as free agency took them from tean-to-team. The original idea was for the number to signify importance in the batting order, but as you will see that tradition changed over the years. Aaron-44 Ruth-3 Bonds-25 Mays-24 F. Robinson-20 McGwire-25 Sosa-21 Killebrew-3 R. Jackson -44 M Schmidt-20 M. Mantle-7 Musial-6 McGriff-28 Stargell-8 Winfield-3/9 Ernie Banks-14 Ted Wiliams-6 Mel Ott-4 Jackie Robinson-42 Too many choices, not enough consistency. |
