I was watching a program on television last night which claimed that General Motors debt was two/thirds that of Canada's total debt. Frankly i find this hard to believe. Can someone give me the actual debt figures for both entities? Yours Faithfully DPRK007 |

GM debt: $290 billion as of September 30, 2004 ("GM's Debt Crisis" By Daniel Gross moneybox (December 21, 2004) http://slate.msn.com/id/2111294/ "The [Canadian] federal debt (accumulated deficit) was $501.5 billion in 2003?04" ("Annex 1 Canada?s Fiscal Progress" Department of Finance, Canada (November 17, 2004) http://www.fin.gc.ca/ec2004/eca1e.html). Based on these numbers, GM's debt is 58% of Canada's, so the numbers in the television program were probably accurate. Canada's debt has probably been decreasing, whereas GM's has probably been increasing, since these numbers were published. Sincerely, Wonko |
