Hi blucken,

According to a 27 March 2002 press release from MedMarket Diligence,
the global market for high strength medical adhesives was $120 million
per year in 2001, and is forecast to grow to $500 million by 2007.

"Surgical Sealants and Medical Adhesives Advance to Reach $2 Billion
by 2007"
http://www.mediligence.com/PR/PR-03-27-02.htm

I have not been able to locate a breakdown for US and European sales
of high strength medical adhesives, but MedMarket Diligence points out
that (at the report date) high strength medical adhesives are limited
to external use in the USA, but are used for many internal surgical
procedures in Europe.

The above web page also provides overall figures for medical and
surgical sealants. This market stood at $542 million globally in 2001
($120 million in the USA), and is forecast to grow to $1.5 billion by
2007.

There is much information about medical adhesive products and markets
in this 28 March 2002 press release by Advanced Medical Solutions
Group plc:
"Proposed acquisition of MedLogic Global Holdings Limited"
http://www.admedsol.com/press/releases2002/020328Medlogic.html

That press release quotes the worldwide wound closure market at $3.3
billion (retail) and estimates that tissue adhesives will eventually
account for 40% of that market.

In that press release, the directors of AMS Group plc state that they
believe that Dermabond currently has "by far the major share of the
global tissue adhesives market". Dermabond sales for 2001 are
estimated at $16 million in the following Business Journal article:
http://triangle.bizjournals.com/triangle/stories/2001/08/27/story3.html

More detailed information can be obtained from market research firms.

MedMarket Diligence offers for sale an industry report "Worldwide
Wound Sealant Market, 2002-2010", and "MedMarkets" magazine which
analyzes market opportunities for medical technology.

Consulting firm Kline & Company is touting a syndicated report series
on medical adhesives including "competitive and business
intelligence", but this will cost $33,000:

adhesives) the type used in bandages and patches - any info here,
willing to pay more if necessary.

Thanks

Hi blucken,

I'll try to help further, but I'm still not sure exactly what you are
seeking.

Are you interested in the size of the market for pressure-sensitive
adhesive bandages and patches?

Or do you want the size of the market for the adhesives used in the
manufacture of those products?

Regards,
eiffel-ga

Hi blucken,

Thanks for clarifying that you are interested in the value of the
adhesives used in manufacture of pressure sensitive adhesive bandages
and pads.

Market research companies, when touting their reports, repeatedly
stress that the adhesives industry is fragmented and spans many
industry segments that continually change as the technology evolves.
Indeed, the only comprehensive data seems to be sold in their reports.
Nevertheless, some information can be obtained by putting together
clues provided in the introductions to the market research reports.

The Rauch Guide to the U.S. Adhesives and Sealants Industry, Third
Edition, reports the US market for medical and dental adhesives to be
$50 million per year in 1998, or half a percent of the total adhesives
market.
http://www.adhesivesmag.com/CDA/ArticleInformation/features/BNP__Features__Item/0,2101,11471,00.html

According to the following MTI report, the global adhesives market is
generally regarded as mature and slow-growing (2-3% per annum). The
total adhesives market size is $22 billion. If medical is 0.5% of the
total, as suggested by the Rauch Guide, this equates to $110 million
(for all medical adhesives, not just medical PSAs). Geographically,
the US adhesives market share is given as 29% of the total, with China
and Japan next, and no other countries mentioned:

"World Adhesives File 2000-2005" ($2000)
http://www.marketfile.com/print/paint/title5/index.htm
(click on the report title for more details, contents and sample page)

According to a report from the Business Communications Company, the
2001 US market for specialty adhesives was about $5.7 billion, and is
forecast to grow at 4.3% per year, with medical and dental
applications being the fastest-growing sector at 5.9% per year:

RC-176R Specialty Adhesives: Where To? ($3500)
http://www.bccresearch.com/editors/RC-176R.html
(click on the report title for more details and contents)

Avery Dennison, a major PSA player, reported 5.8% year-on-year growth
for pressure sensitive adhesives in their 2001 First Quarter report:
http://www.colour-europe.de/pf-0-neueste-english-15_05_2001.htm

Frost and Sullivan report the size of the European PSA market (medical
and non-medical) to be $620 million in 2000, forecast to grow to $796
million in 2007:
http://www.engineeringtalk.com/news/fro/fro122.html

More information is available in some of the reports listed in the
earlier answer, including:
"Global Opportunities in Medical Adhesives" (Kline & Company, $33000)
http://www.klinegroup.com/studies/chemicals/y535.htm

An opinion expressed on some of the pages obtained by the Google
searches below is that the quantity of adhesive bandages sold is
expected to drop as more and more use is made of liquid skin
protection substances. However, the dollar value of adhesive bandage
sales may continue to increase as more sophisticated products are
developed.

I realise that the above snippets are not as specific or detailed as
you would like, but I cannot locate anything else except in paid
reports. I hope the above information is nevertheless useful.
