Hello hose7-ga,

By ?hole pin? I assume that you are referring to the flagstick. The
United States Golf Association (USGA), which defines the rules of golf
in the United States, recommends that the flagstick be at least seven
feet in height, although this does not appear to be a requirement.

The USGA recommends that the flagstick be at least seven feet in
height and that its diameter be not greater than three-quarters of an
inch from a point three inches above the ground to the bottom of the
hole.?

I did mean flagstick. But I am puzzled by the requirement reading "at
least" seven feet, rather than seven feet -- period. Here's why: I
bought a pin-finder, which purports to show me the distance to a pin.
It's an 8-power monocular, with a scale inside, showing yardage and
meters. You put the bottom of the scale on the green-level at the base
of the pin, and read the yardage from the top of the pin. Now, as you
probably know, calculating angular size/object height/distance, if you
know any two of those quantities you can calculate the third. The
pin-finder, I think, measures the angular size visually on the scale,
and must assume a standard object height, in order to give the
distance. But if the pin or flagstick has no standard size, how could
it work ?

Hello hose7-ga,

I am not prepared to explain how a pin-finder works. You might want to
post a separate question for that. My guess, however is that the
flagstick is typically 7 feet tall. I found a few links to support
this.

TheGolfExpert.com
Golf Glossary
http://www.thegolfexpert.com/lingo-f.asp
?flagstick - (aka: "pin", "stick") a slender pole, usually about 7
feet in height, with a flag on it placed inside the cup to mark the
location of the hole.?

Leaderboard.com
http://www.leaderboard.com/GLOSSARY?FLAGSTICK
?FLAG STICK

Pretty much what it sounds like. The rod that holds the flag 6-1/2
feet above the ground.

The USGA recommend that flag sticks be no less than 7 feet in height.
But in practice, we see flag sticks that are 7 feet long and are
submerged into the hole about 6 inches.?

Yahoo Shopping
Golfgods
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/golfgods/gote.html
?Flagstick
A slender pole, usually about 7 feet in height, with a flag on it
placed inside the cup to mark the location of the hole.?

I hope this helps.
