Dear One JonJon, Your approach is of course a rational approach. If you seek to understand those who seek to return to their religion (or convert to another religion), there are several possible explanations. Some people seek to "return" to their traditions or religion, because: (1) They feel that religion provides them with structured life and with support for their decision that they could not find anywhere, had they decided to follow your rational approach. The religious environment provides social support for a person to stick with the way of life they have chosen, and not everybody could follow a path independently. (2) They feel that religion provides them with moral and spritual answers that cannot be found outside this faith. They need the transcendental dimension, some sort of divine inspiration, that would guide them. (3) They "return" because they want to be connected with their ancestry, with the heritage, with what they believe to have been the righteous ways of former generations. Sometimes it has to do with some life circumstances. For example, they have immigrated and feel detached of the traditional environment, and seek to restore some sense of security by re-aligning themselves with their religion; or they have children, and suddenly they would like to provide their children with a link to their heritage. I agree, but would venture to add another point. If one grew up going to church, there is an emotional element. As an adult, one might have gotten out of the habit, moved away (as I have), not missed it, maybe even rationalized about not caring - until something sets off the emotional desire to return. That could be many things, from a wedding or baptism or burial service - or just "nothing better to do" on a Sunday morning in a place where one's a church of one's religion is, maybe an historical building worth viewing, or just out of curiosity after many years. Whatever, one was there and discovered that one had good feelings at hearing the familiar liturgy and hymns, and wanted to repeat having those good feelings. And the people were nice, too. That is not deeply religious motivated, but neither is the related 3rd reason given by Politicalguru, which can apply for attending mother language services in a foreign country. As for Islam: disregarding - PLEASE - for the moment how we may feel about Islam or our own religions, Islam makes the logical claim of any religion that it is the one and only true belief; infidels can't be blamed too much for not yet having recognized this, but apostates from Islam get harsher treatment. A Muslim finding him/herself back in a Islamic community - either in an Islamic country or in one in another country - would from his/her own knowledge the religion feel a compunction to return to the practice of the religion. In addition, some even go towards logical answers (i.e. the miracles presented in the Bible and the proof of modern science in the Quran). I have seen many people convinced of a religion by seeing miracles in the Bible and Scientific fact in the Quran. |
