Hello, fever20-ga!
I have compiled numerous references to papers and articles concerning
women's rights in Indonesia. Many of the articles reference the
history of women's rights in Indonesia as well as the current status
of women in that country.

"Two things impressed me in Indonesia," he said. "One was the
extraordinary tolerance for different religions. Indonesia is very
proud that Islam is not the state religion even though 90 percent of
the population is Muslim." Islam is one of five state religions:
Islam, Protestant, Roman Catholic, Hindu and Buddhism.
"The other thing that impressed me about Indonesia is that women
played a very important role in the family and in society and in
government," he said. "This is something that went back centuries."

"Girls working as Domestics face Abuse," by Human Rights Watch, Indonesia
Jakarta, June 20, 2005

Scroll down to article:
"Hundreds of thousands of girls working as domestics in Indonesia face
physical and sexual abuse as well as gross labor exploitation, Human
Rights Watch said in a new report released today. The Indonesian
government has failed to provide any oversight to protect these girls.
The 74-page report "Always on Call: Abuse and Exploitation of Child
Domestic Workers" documents how Indonesian children as young as 12
work 14 to 18 hours a day, seven days a week, without a day off. They
are also forbidden from leaving their place of employment or
contacting their families."

"Given the persistent complaints that Indonesia is lagging behind
other countries in the world in terms of protecting the rights of its
women, the observance today, March 8, of the United Nations Day for
Women's Rights should serve as a serious reminder of the huge task
that lies ahead for the nation in this particular sphere of our social
and political life."
