Some years ago, visiting France, I watched a movie on television that
I recall enjoying a great deal. It looked to have been made in the
70's. In the film, the middle-aged star is visited by his beautiful
young daughter or niece whom he tries to hide from his wife, I
believe, so that the wife does not suspect her husband of infedelity,
and for some reason the husband cannot explain the existance of this
relation to her. At any rate, there is a rather impressive car chase
scene towards the end of the movie.

I wonder if you could identify this movie for me given what little
information I was able to supply above? Thank you!

In "Divorce, Italian Style," Marcello Mastroianni plays a middle-aged
man who shares his house with a young, beautiful female cousin. He
tries to conceal his passion for the cousin from his wife. Does this
sound familiar?

No, afraid not -- thanks for checking into it though! Just looked up
"D,IS" (sounds like an excellent movie, btw), but the film I'm
thinking of is definitely "en français" and I didn't see any stills
from the film, but given that it was made in '61, I assume that it was
shot in b&w. my film was in color, a point I should have thought to
mention when posting the question.

thanks very much for looking into it for me, pink!

I'm not sure if this is tha fils you want, but in any case...
I remember a french film called "Le gendarme se marie" (1968) that in
some way matches with your description. In that film a middle aged
policeman (Louis de Funes) falls in love of a rich widow, but on the
one hand he is afraid of his daughter because he thinks she will never
accept their relationship. On the other hand, he thinks that the
existence of a daughter can displease the widow. In consequence, he
tries to avoid that they meet and this is tha cause of comic
situations.
I hope this informations has been helpful!!
For more information please visit www.louisdefunes.com. In that web
page a lot of information about the actor is provided. This actor has
appeared in a lot of comic french films in those years.

I doubt this is the film you're looking for since, as far, as I
remember there's no car chase at the end of the movie but it looks
like "un moment d'égarement" from 1977 where 2 middle-aged friends
take their respective daughter down to St Tropez and one of the man
get seduced by his friend's daughter and tries to hide the relation to
his friend and wife. In the 80's, the script of this movie was taken
on Blame it on Rio with Michael Caine. But are your sure it's a comedy
and not a drama?
